One Legged Robin

While we were strolling on the platform by seaside in Dwarka I saw this one legged Robin, oblivious of my surprised looks, and clicking it's picture, it kept on hopping and collecting food.

This poem is an ode to that chirpy, happy one legged bird.

Yes I am a One Legged Robin.

I hop and jump,

To pick the crumbs,

The worms and grains,

It's all my food.

Be sunshine or rain I jump and fly,

I hop and jump,

To pick the crumbs.

Where my toes fell,

How I lost them,

Who did this to me,

Or

Was a cruel turn of fate.

I have no time to,

Sit and cry,

I have to pick food before my babies cry.

Oh! How well I remember that day,

When a thread cut through my leg,

Oh! what was my fault?

I was merrily running with my mother ,

On the sea shore ,

Enjoying sunshine and foamy waves,

With a wave came the thread ,

Got wrapped around my leg ,

The more I struggled to free myself ,

The more it bit into my flesh.

And then it pained beyond endurance,

It cut through my delicate bone,

My leg fell away from me,

Like a slain warrior.

I screamed in pain ,

When I opened my eyes ,

I saw my aunts and uncles ,

Brothers and sisters ,

Friends and foes ,

Clicking their tongue,

Pitying me,

Oh look she has lost my one leg.

First a wave of anger swept through me,

I shouted in anger,

You silly humans,

Have you some heart and brains?

You enjoy and litter,

Without any thought,

See, your carelessness,

What it has done to me.

Then self pity and uncertainty,

Swept over me,

What now, what now, what now,

echoed through me.

No. I will not, I will not,

Wallow in pity,

Nor will live with indignity,

I am now "One legged Robin".

I will survive to live,

Life full of gaiety and dignity,

I looked at my mother,

She nudged me with her wing,

Pecked me with her beak,

Gave me strength.

And with a final painful cry,

I got up on my one leg,

To soar high and fly.

I Am A One Legged Robin

I will never cry

Will soar high.
